OMG!!! Luke Wilson was right!

Look, no one is surprised that you can't talk and surf the web at the same time... that's the way it's always been since the beginning.

Is that why recent reports show that more smartphone data was used on Verizon? Maybe people aren't busy taking phone calls while they are surfing the web.

@Ryan Deen -- "In this information industry, consumers are not going to pay for a subscription when they can go online and read the same info on a website for the cost of their internet"

It makes you wonder though... if a magazine has been around for 50 years... and they're used to people PAYING for their content... why on Earth would they give it away for free online in the first place?

I mean... I'm glad they do. But, it just makes you think.

Maybe they think by putting content online for free, it will make you go buy the paper magazine. That might have been fine 10 years ago... but now we've got smartphones, iPads, Kindles, etc. The magazine's plan might have backfired. We're now used to getting everything online for free.
@mopey -- "Why would anyone want to read a bunch of ads in a magazine on an iPad?"

Good point... but it depends on the type of magazine.

When I read a photography magazine, I *like* the ads... as they pertain to a particular topic.

Sports Illustrated has ads for aftershave and cars you will never buy. But, if you read SI... you obviously enjoy their content and want them to stay in business, don't ya?
@DrDr

Not exactly. Microsoft already has Bing maps.... with aerial views and that awesome "Bird's Eye" 3/4 view. This is just the next step.

In contrast... Courier was new hardware, software and a bunch of other stuff they would have to create from scratch.

I bet we'll see this soon. Courier was just a CGI render of a concept... this video looks like it's actually working.

@TheHypnotist -- "Am I the only one who feels that engadget does way too many stories on cameras and camcorders that I don't care about?"

@TheHypnotist -- "and I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea and thing I'm being a negative nancy or something, I'd just rather see a post about the HTC Vanguard (which had been a story today, that Engadget isn't really covering)."

@TheHypnotist -- "I just feel that the advancement of the camera industry is not nearly as important in technology as the advancement of smartphones. Hell, I'd rather see more posts on laptops. Honestly, more people would read and comment on news about the HTC Vanguard, and it bothers me that Engadget didn't even run the story today."

@TheHypnotist -- "honestly, am I the only one who feels that Engadget does way too much camera coverage? I don't see why there are so many posts about them, they never are very popular."

If camera aren't your thing.... WHY DO YOU KEEP CLICKING ON THE CAMERA STORIES!!!
@Ducman69 -- "We all know that surely over 95% of all trips are under 100 miles, likely near 99% (guessing)."

That's true. 100 miles sounds like a lot... But remember, that's 50 miles out and 50 miles back. It should be enough for going to work though.

But my point is... you pay $25,000 for a car that you can't use for all of your travels. And at about the 95 mile mark I'd be freaking out!

If you have a family, the dad can drive the Nissan Leaf to work, and the wife can keep the SUV. Then you'd take all your trips in the SUV on the weekends.

But the Leaf is not a car to be used for everything. If you buy one, you probably have a 2nd or 3rd car already.

You're a motorcycle guy... so you know all about having a vehicle that you can't drive all the time.

And that's gonna be the biggest problem with the all-electric vehicle. At least until we have nationwide mass-transit
@pielor

I'm a GMail user... I don't use a Blackberry for corporate work.

I'm not one of those Crackberry addicts... I just got a Blackberry Curve because it was $30 from Verizon, and I have a girlfriend and a lot of other friends on Blackberry Messenger. So it made sense.

But I'm over it. Android is sooo much nicer than Blackberry will ever be.
@TheCake

I've done one better. I went through my GMail address book, and deleted people I no longer care about... so I won't be tempted to write them a letter.

And, I did the same thing with my cell phone contact list. I won't be tempted to call them... and their name won't show up in the caller ID... so I only answer calls from people whom I approve.

Seriously though... Facebook isn't that big of a deal. If you can't handle getting friend requests on a "social" website... stay in your cave.

What do you do if you meet one of these people on the street? Fake a limp and stagger off?
@Pacey -- "~400 miles on a ~ 8 gallon tank."

That's a more useful measure.

You can use electricity during the week... but you can also use it for longer trips on the weekend too.

You can't do that with the all-electric Nissan Leaf.

Sure, the Nissan Leaf is $10,000 cheaper than the Chevy Volt... but it's *only* for short trips. I wouldn't want my car to tell me where I can't go.

But, the Leaf will be perfect for some people... especially when charging stations become popular.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"My brother is about to leave for the Marines, and I (the geeky brother) want to send something with him to keep him busy. What is a very rugged PMP or similar, with WiFi and a nice UI? A camera is definitely a plus."
