Got a hankering for Pine Trail? We attest to a certain weakness ourselves, and now MSI's
Wind U160 netbook is on sale for $380 to fulfill your Atom N450 snacking needs. We were intrigued by the little laptop when we played with it back at CES, particularly if its standard 6-cell battery hump can really produce the quoted 14 hours of life. For whatever reason Newegg and Buy.com are showing now-shipping right now, while Amazon's lagging with pre-orders only at this point, but we're sure you'll make the right retail choice, whatever happens.
Somehow i don't believe a standard 6 cell batter can produce 14 hours of battery life. Common sense depletes this..
@JustThatUglyGuy Asus' ULV 13in with a GT210m gets 12 hours on a six cell, so an atom + intel gma getting 14 is plausible.
Also that isn't how you use the word deplete, and engadget isn't myspace. The more you try to have an image the worse off you are unless you're really funny or really helpful, and frankly you're neither. Also you're 14.
@JustThatNerdyGuy The Pine Trail Atoms are very, very efficient. The new chipset is also far less hungry, and graphics have been streamlined too. 14 hours is probably optimistic (maybe with no wifi, screen dimmed etc), but it won't be far off.
@Broderbund
Perhaps he meant that common sense depletes the battery, and therefore in real world use the battery won't achieve the quoted 14 hours.
Of course, in that case, he probably doesn't need to concern himself with this phenomenon anyway, since he clearly lacks common sense.
ZING!
@Broderbund I see what u did there :p
Anyway this thing looks terrible, that 6 cell battery stick out like a tumor coming off the back of the thing, bad design.
@Broderbund The 10.1-inch netbook takes a page from the Sony Vaio playbook (or Toshiba Mini NB205) Thanks to the new CPU, the battery is expected to last for more than 10 hours, and pricing will start at about $350. First view: http://bit.ly/msi-wind-160-examined
No to INTEL ATOM!
@applehateboy If you don't like atoms, don't buy netbooks, or comment on netbook posts. So you're not the target market, get over it.
The truth is, netbooks and atom have been hugely successful in bringing laptops into the mass consumer market. Anyone can have a laptop now, I think that is a good thing.
@applehateboy
Yes to ARM CORTEX!
@Oli D Who told you that atom is a requirement for a netbook? I'd take a netbook with a VIA Nano any day over an atom.
Atom is garbage. The whole platform is garbage unless you pair it with Ion.
I think the Asus 1201N killed all the netbooks out there.. or any other 12" Ion(2) netbook as for that.
@joshl What? This is neither ION nor 12".
@BigD145 What I meant is that having Ion and 12 inch netbooks totally killed smaller screened netbooks (eg. what happened to the 7inches, remember them?), and netbooks with bad performance (like this MSI).
Not loving the tacky silver gloss battery, the keyboard looks pretty high quality though.
Is this capable of playing 720p ?
@analogx *720p content?
@analogx not in 720p
It looks cheap... My mini 210 won't be worried in front of that overpriced opposition!
still 1024x600, that's nto worth $300 IMHO
@Atkins
Apparently "metallic turd " colour is all the rage among electronics manufactureres at the moment.
They could at least bump these netbooks up to 1280 x 800.
Same ole specs...
@JakeInDC Agreed, I will never, ever buy another 1024x600 netbook. I feel the urge to chop the feet off of whoever came up with that screen resolution as a netbook standard.
I will purchase the first Ion2 that comes out, but not this Intel graphics crap.
why do they even build intel graphic? Computer industry is going backward! GRRRRR!!!
I think I'm happy with my Asus Eee PC 1005HAB. It does what I bought it for. It does 720 with GMA booster and if you load the right codecs too
Has anyone tried an msi netbook? when i was in Taipei a couple yrs back everyone had msi and in SF too, i think this would be a good unit, i like asus (on my second one and just ordered the mini 210hd for myself, the asus is my wife's- Agreed the battery is what closes the deal breaker on this one IMHO.
Looks good and has a great price, but that screen res is HORRIBLE. I'd probably grab one of these if it weren't for such a low res. Come on MSI!
Gah. Chrome. Please! No more ghetto fabulous chrome! Nobody thinks it's white gold! Stop putting it on things!
this is awesome, i might buy it for the fun of it
