@Lubing The Tube
Ok somebody already pointed it out.
I would like to know how the editors voted the iPhone 3GS as smartphone of the year over the droid? Take away the app store which is also available for the iPod so not an iPhone OS exclusive and then I just don't understand how it wins, please explain (genuine question)
@a dumb cat
Though I trust the editor's picks more (due to the popularity contest that is the reader's awards sections), I'm pleasantly surprised to see variety in both lists. Apple products didn't win every category as some believed (again, popularity contest argument is nullified). And I really like a lot of the picks in both lists, with much consistency between them. Glad Palm won at least one award. ;)
@Lubing The Tube
Too bad the Nexus One can't compete for these awards.
@Arkv2 The Nexus One came out in 2010 -- you'll see it next year!
@Nilay Patel
Can you point out the reasoning to the iPhone winning against the Droid please? Like I said above, serious question.
@Lubing The Tube
I understand this one. Even when the iPhone can't multitask, it has a very robust and well established environment; Android is catching up really fast but it still needs some time. Maybe this year :D
@Lubing The Tube Scroll down just a bit -- the short version is that we thought the Droid was an important device, but the iPhone still has the momentum and ecosystem in the smartphone market.
@Nilay Patel
For once I agree. The iPhone is awesome with its apps. While the Droid is awesome for it's overclocking and pure fun of hacking and using Android. I still check every day (since November 6th) to see what Devs come up for this thing, they haven't disappointed me yet!
@MM OBVIOUS
There's always the /exclude/ you can add if you hate Apple news. Besides, I really liked the Asus UL line, don't know what else was more deserving aside from the Acer Timeline series (Apple fans drowned out the competition on that one for sure if you go back and look at the poll count).
@a dumb cat
Now your comment won't make sense since they got their feelings hurt
"fanboy website!" says everyone
@a dumb cat
Yeah, the editors pick's were almost exactly what I voted for. Well done.
Also, Thermaltake Level 10 case > Apple iMac 27-inch
@a dumb cat Well there is also the fact that it appears that Engadget, to a certain extent, has toned down the number of Apple articles. I think there was enough backlash in the "discussion threads that someone said whoa...wait a sec.
@a dumb cat
To some extent, lists like these don't really make sense. A device may be swell for most people, but not fit what you're looking for. Personal preference always wins over what other people think.
That said, I appreciate all the hard work Engadget put into this. Thanks, guys!
@a dumb cat I love my TickleMe Plant. It moves when you Tickle It! Google It. It's more like a pet then a plant
@Plantastic Here is the link to see a TickleMe Plant move when Tickled Http://tr.im/Ek6C
@Plantastic
i agree with almost all the editor picks.
droid shoulda lost to a more robust dedicated pnd.
iphone 3gs shoulda lost to n900.
other than that, i surprisingly agree.
@erik1080
Totally..
@a dumb cat
Wow I think this site is finally becoming a Apple hate site. To each his own I guess. What a shame, it was really good for a while.
Well done to all winners (and losers)
good list if you ask me (Y)
@commenter7
Seriously this is a decent list. My fav would have to be the "Most Useless Machine Ever." Lol, I built one for extra credit and all my friends thought it was awesome. It only took me like 4 hours to build too.
@commenter7
this is a surprisingly good list
@commenter7
and what surprised me most (and made me most happy) was that in both lists PS3 slim won =)
and milestone/droid as best smartphone
Ok @Joshuatopolsky, how much did Apple pay you to fix the readers vote?
Lol...
@commenter7
I'm very happy with the results. Do think the editors got it right with the tv though.
@IBrian Is it just me or did Engadget never cover "The Most Useless Machine Ever"? There's no link and I couldn't find an Engadget post through Google.
Zune HD definitely deserved an award...the iPod Touch is getting long in the tooth, and has a poorer screen and is much more expensive for the same capacity.
Overall though, I agree, and the Droid definitely deserves what it got (especially now with multitouch).
Zune HD? That product was awesome, but votes are votes, man.
@ScienceProUSAcom honestly for PMP the Archos 5IT should have gotten the award, it has pretty much everything that you want in a PMP other than a HD screen.
@ScienceProUSAcom LOVE LOVE LOVE the Zune HD - err Windows Phone 7 Series.
Can't wait to get me a new phone.
@ScienceProUSAcom Agree. Zune HD completely deserved a spot...I would have thought the editors would have at least recognized that.
Sad to see so many people have probably never even used one.
@ScienceProUSAcom
iPod Touch 3G probably was the laziest generation upgrade for Apple. They just slapped on new processors and thats it.
@ScienceProUSAcom
I tend to agree, especially since I strictly use a PMP for music and a Smartphone for apps, I think the Zune HD completely destroys the iPod Touch.
However, I can totally understand that some people use a simple dumbphone and expect their PMP to serve as their pocket computer, and for those people the App Store is a huge advantage over the Zune HD's superior media abilities.
@ScienceProUSAcom
The Zune HD is the best PMP I've ever used, and I own both a 32GB Zune HD and an 8GB iPod Touch (2G). A slight CPU bump wasn't enough for me so I opted for the Zune over the iPod Touch and haven't looked back. After the 4.3 update, web browsing is on par with mobile Safari, and the UI is just so much more appealing.
@ScienceProUSAcom Votes are votes, which explains it. I have Zune HD and had the ipod touch, Zune HD is better I think it should be there. Not everyone has tried or even seen Zune HD which explains why people didn't vote for it as much as ipod touch.
@ScienceProUSAcom I'm with you. I believe the Zune HD should've beat out the iTouch in both readers and editors, but there's a reason I'm not an editor, and a popularity contest is a popularity contest.
@ScienceProUSAcom
I think we all knew this would be a popularity contest in the end, but hey! We all also know that the ZuneHD beats the iPod to a pulp as a PMP device anyway. Once 7 Series is released, more people will be introduced to it.
@ScienceProUSAcom I'd get an iPod touch if only for Mac compatibility and the ability to, you know, use the thing outside!
@sfox8 the zune HD beats the ipod touch to a pulp? and we all know that? care to explain? it has a *different* screen (more vibrant colors, but less viewable outside and SMALLER), and a different interface. those obvious differences aside, with the ipod touch you get thousands of potential accessories (including car integration in many new cars and old), hundreds of thousands of apps (which can also be used on an iphone or ipad if you ever choose to get either of those, including itunes remote which is awesome when you have an airport express setup), slick reliable and intuitive interface. the zune... uh.... only works on windows, and.... uh... yep that's all i got. BEATS IPOD TO A PULP REMEMBER?!
@ScienceProUSAcom
I know, Zune Hd blows any ipod off the water, and where is the nokia n900, the best phone i many years, what a shame engadget
@Trax
While I agree that the iPod touch 3G was a lazy update, but the processor and larger memory were not the only things updated. If you compare 2G and 3G side by side, you will notice pixels look better on the 3G, and the built-in speaker sounds better at sub-bass range.
@ScienceProUSAcom If anyone outside of America could get a hold of a Zune....
@ScienceProUSAcom Bought my Zune HD the day it was released and fell in love immediately. I had only owned iPods before it and the the stylization and build quality of the device just simply blows them all out of the water, which is exactly what I want from a PMP. I already have my smartphone for computing anyways. The A/V dock is better than any accessory I've seen for the iPod Touch too.
For those that don't think it works outside due to the OLED screen, I have kept mine on max brightness level (which looks gorgeous btw) and didn't even realize this was a complaint about OLED screens until I read about it on here. Clearly some of you who think this is a huge issue just haven't used the device.
@Jive Turkey Ya just gotta know someone who lives in the usa to get one....i live in the caribbean and i have one :)...marketplace working and all :)
@Trax just call it iPod touch 2.5G.
Imma let you finish...
@N900
Kanye was soooo last year
@commenter7
Since this post is based off products from 2009, it is perfectly acceptable ;)
The impressive bit is that the Droid cleaned up in every relevant category *except* Editor's Choice for smartphones, signalling that engadget only needs to *slightly* get with the times.
@chaboud
which really boggles my mind. how can it be gadget of the year, yet not the smartphone? Not saying their choices or wrong, just flawed logic amirite?
@chaboud We thought the Droid was an important gadget and marked a big shift in the industry for both Google and Motorola, but when it came to picking a pure smartphone, the iPhone was our choice. The Droid is great, but it's still not quite as polished as the iPhone, and the app and accessory ecosystem doesn't compare.
