Manual video exposure control provides novice filmmakers with the image control they are accustomed to in a still camera, all while shooting professional-level cinematic video. For easier video recording operation and familiar functionality for beginners, the Rebel T2i's autofocus can be operated before or during video recording by pressing the shutter button half-way down in video mode. Another feature debuting in the Rebel T2i is Canon's new Movie Crop mode, where the user can achieve 7x magnification when shooting SD video for a significantly increased "telephoto" effect. Unlike the digital zoom feature found in many compact digital cameras, Canon's new Movie Crop mode actually crops the image directly from the CMOS sensor at full SD resolution to preserve maximum image quality and provide additional zoom power. The new Movie Crop feature is especially helpful for achieving extra full resolution zoom power when filming youth sports, such as a child running to the furthest end of a field. For better sound quality when shooting video, the Rebel T2i DSLR includes an external stereo microphone jack, a first for an EOS Rebel model, in addition to its built-in monaural microphone. These audio and video features supplement a tremendous range of additional must-have video features in an entry-level Digital SLR camera.

dam why is photography such an expensive hobby. i want one of these so bad but my cant get one on my college student budget :(

You don't always need to get the latest and greatest. The 450D, 500D and 1000D can be bought for relatively cheap prices. Although, if you actually get the photography bug, it will be the lens buying that'll really kill your wallet.

For what this thing does, it's cheap.
@TjK i have the 450 d that i bought in 2008. Its a great camera. the problem is new ones come all the time and prices are the problem. My camera came at the invention of live view technology. The 5d MK2 was the time of video and who knows whats next.

I have a 450d/XSi, I got it back in 2008 as well. Great camera, and really the only thing I envy about the newer cameras is the video mode.
Summary: Get the Canon Rebel XSi before they stop selling it (Unless you want video)

Exactly. I have a 450D and it's still going strong! It's a great camera for the price.
But I'm thinking of upgrading for a 5D mark II because I need that wonderful, almost noise free, high ISOs... and why not go FF while I'm at it? Think I'll get it with a 24-70 2.8.
Question! Has Canon released the new firmware yet? If the T2i has all those video modes why doesn't the 5D? And what about manual exposure? I've read about the magic lantern firmware but I'm afraid the camera will ship with the 1.2.4 firmware, which ML isn't compatible with.

I still own a 350D (8MP) and it takes beautiful pictures. My ideal sensor size would be about 12MP--there would be enough detail, but the RAW files wouldn't chew up your hard drive and your system resources while processing.
I would love to see the video this can produce. Full manual?

WOW, canon FINALLY giving us what we want - 24/25/30fps @ 1080p AND an external microphone jack, i hope it has auto focus so we can use it as a camcorder. 18.7mp photos will look amazing i'm sure. Hope it can save the video as AVCHD with AC3 2.0 192kbps+ @ 48khz.
@hajj3 Most of what we want... We still don't know if it can change the aperture while shooting. Also I doubt the audio will be all that amazing. They definitely aren't going to make it better then the 7D. (It almost is with these specs.)

Yeah, "most" of what we want. I'm still waiting for body based IS. Have you looked at the IS lenses? I mean DAMN. And if your argument is that body IS isn't as good as lens IS, then I argue this isn't exactly a "PRO" camera. Give the little man something too ya know.
@credo I'm not too familiar with Canon's entire lens range, but they have the 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS, both of which are cheap, decent lenses. Should be enough for you to get started out.
Also, if you can't afford expensive glass, you're not tied to any system. Go Olympus or Pentax if you want in-body IS.

I guess my issue is with buying the ef-s lenses. I still have 35 mm bodies and I enjoy the fact that my lenses actually work on both systems. Plus if I ever decide to get a full frame system I really don't think I'll be in the mood to buy new lenses. Now the 70-300 IS DO, theres a lense worth lusting after.

It shoots H.264 in a quicktime wrapper. Which is basically the same thing as AVCHD. The audio is PCM (uncompressed).
I'm curious what the bitrate is and how well it subdues the jello effect.

Yes everyone, I know that OTHERS have body based IS. Its sorta how I know about it (I didn't just invent it last night in my sleep). I do appreciate the suggestions (you do appear to be trying to help afterall) its just that I want CANON to come up with one. Thats really what I was going for. I've already invested in the sytem and don't want to sell my gear at half price just to pick up someone else's model (then have Canon come out with body IS- that would be a slap in the face huh?). I'm not looking for suggestions, just wanted to leave a bit of a rant. Let me rant in peace damnit.

These ridiculous MP ratings are utterly pointless. It's become a pissing-contest as to who can come up with the highest MP camera, even if that metric does nothing for actual image quality.
It's even more comical when you consider how inept the average person is when it comes to technology - people think they "need" 18MPs and all they do is scale their images down to email to family or never even bother bumping the settings to the highest resolution.
@kashve , @Hazdaz Have you even seen the 7D's high ISO scores? Head over to DPReview, have a looksie, rethink your cliched "MOAR MEGAPIXELS EQUALS MOAR NOISE" response and come back.

p.s. If this Canon sensor has a problem, it's with diffraction. It kicks in at f6.3 which is not very good news for landscapers.

That is true, but that exact person will compare this camera, with an 18mp sensor, and another camera with a 10mp sensor and get the impression that the 550D is better because 18 > 10.
Whilst I understand the desire for a lower megapixel count for better high ISO performance in more prosumer-professional cameras, the average joe is going to buy this camera based on megapixels.

With point and shoots the megapixel race is ridiculous, which is probably the reason Canon went with 10 MP sensors of the S90 and G11. The higher resolution sensors are too noisy on sensors that small. But with a DSLR that is not as much of an issue. A sensor that size can handle that many megapixels. If this were a point and shoot it would look like crap

I don't want a 10-12 MP sensor because of ISO performance, I want it because it reduces the HD space to store RAW files and increases the speed they can be saved to flash. Also, processing goes faster with more manageable file sizes.
But I'll gladly take it with the video modes thrown in.

That's probably true, and great, the extra resolution doesn't hurt - but just imagine what the low-light performance would be like if they used the same new technology at 12MP. (Okay, it would only be a bit better, because the difference between 12MP and 18MP isn't that much... but it isn't that much resolution-wise either, only a 22% increase.)
I don't even know offhand what my camera is, I think 10MP? It's plenty. But I'd certainly like better performance at high ISOs (and I don't mean silly ones... 800 and 1600). Aside from the full-frame cameras, which are definitely better, I'm not really seeing evidence of massive reductions in noise in sensor raw data in new cameras - they seem to be increasing resolution instead.
Oh, and while they're improving sensors I'd like a higher dynamic range (i.e. it can detect more light before reaching the 'white' clip point) too...
And I'd like the higher-quality/more-expensive cameras to become a bit smaller like this range too. And if there's a cake I'd like to have it and eat it, please. :)

For real. The old reason to have more megapixels is to make bigger prints.
What kind of people (people who would buy an entry-level DSLR) make prints often? Or poster-sized prints at that?
I think it's a waste, and they need to focus on more sensitive sensors and not just the megapixel race.

Diffraction doesn't "kick in", it is a physical limit. The level of diffraction at f/11 on a 12mp APS-C camera and a 24mp APS-C camera is exactly the same, but only the higher resolution body is capable of recording it.

@Brian I plan to sell my T1i now too. Amazon is still selling the T2i body for $900 when the PR says $800. Come on Amazon don't screw me on this camera. I need the high frame rate video and external mic input. I bought the T1i in spite of these issues because I needed a new camera.
@jdwusami Ya there are a few things I would like on the T2i over the T1i and, at least for me, it's not that expensive.Might even find a good rebate on it. I bought my T1i kit for about $400. Had a nice rebate on it and for like $100 for a Canon printer that I sold on eBay for like $200-$300. Plus I sold the lens that came with the kit.

If you bought the kit for $400 + $100(printer), and have already sold the printer for $300. Then this makes your leftover Camera+lens for $300.
