iPod nano 5G gets a teardown
Dying to know what that tiny VGA video sensor in the new iPod nano looks like? As usual, the folks at iFixit have it covered -- hit the read link to follow along with all the gory action as it proceeds. (Seriously, they're posting the teardown pictures live as they do it.)
Update: It's all over, and the findings are interesting, if not too shocking: the 8GB of flash is from Toshiba, the processor is an Apple-branded ARM unit manufactured by Samsung, and the camera's VGA resolution is probably explained by its 3mm thickness -- the iPhone 3G's camera is 6mm, and the nano is only 6.2mm thick at its fattest.

Reminds me of being a little kid tearing apart my parents VCRs..."but mom I can put it back together"
Hey mom, where did you put my screw location diagram?
Oh.
You can't take pics with this thing?
Are we in bizarro world? First the iPod Touch gets no camera, and now I find out the Nano can only do video?
This is strange.
quick, come with me if you want to live!
like MMS, it'll be a "feature" next year.
It doesn't need to take pictures, it's a great gaming machine... wait, what?
* Why doesn't the iPod nano take still pictures? Jobs says that the tiny teensy CMOS sensor in the nano isn't up to the quality standards needed for stills; it's too thin. "The sensors for doing a still camera... they are just way too thick to ever fit inside the Nano."
* What about a camera for the iPod touch? The product path for the touch, apparently, is that it's a great gaming device and it's the lowest investment option for getting access to the App Store; given that, the push was to get it down to a price point everyone could afford instead of adding new features like a camera. "So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don't need to add new stuff - we need to get the price down where everyone can afford it." Not to say it won't ever happen.
What would you want to shoot with a VGA camera?
Steve Jobs talked about why the camera doesn't do stills in the NYT:
Quote:
I also asked him why the Nano can record video, but can’t snap still photos. That reason, he said, is technical: the sensors you need to record video are extremely thin these days—thin enough to fit into the wafer-thin Nano. But the ones with enough resolution for stills, especially with autofocus (like the sensor in the iPhone), are much too thick to cram into a player that’s only 0.2 inches thick.
--------------------------
This jibes with the teardown description, plus some hints on why the iphone camera couldn't just be plunked into the ipod touch.:
Quote:
The camera, in all its VGA resolution glory. The camera itself is less than 3 mm thick.
Space may have been a factor in not including a better camera. Excluding its mount, the camera in the iPhone 3G is about 6 mm thick. The 5th Gen nano is 6.2 mm thick at its thickest point.
Unlike the nano, the touch, at 8.5 mm thick, could conceivably support an iPhone-sized camera, although it would certainly be an engineering challenge.

How did they get the iPod nano? Not available at the Apple Store and they just started shipping last night
Engadget did things to get this 5G Nano..
...things they're....not...too proud of =|.
@N900
....not...too proud of? I kid.
"As usual, the folks at iFixit have it covered."
There's your answer right there N900. In the second sentence.
How you missed that, I don't know. Maybe you didn't read.
And troy, if you click the link marked "read", you would see your answer.
"We've got our hands on the new iPod nano 5G, now with a video camera! Thanks to FedEx, we got our nano early on the morning of September 10, 2009."
I swear people need to start reading.
holy crap sorry if I offended (srsly htf did I do that?). You must be next on the chopping block for giving Steve new organs..
So THAT'S what fail looks like on the inside......I think I see some corn.
Maybe I missed the pictures where tegra was identified. hmm..
If you think the Nano is a failure you have no idea what your talking about.
Umm, the number 1 selling mp3 player of all time is a failure? I suppose you think the Zune kicks ass too.
he meant this specific version, not the player itself.
and though the nano may not be fail, it certainly isn't something amazing from a consumer standpoint.
Who says it has to be amazing? $200 doesn't buy you amazing. It gets you a damn good music player though.
WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?
Getting another organ transplant.
Oh I am just the WORST kind of person.
RAPE!!!!!!!!
IS FUN!!!!
Since hte camera is on a ribbon cable, that means we can check the iPod Touch 2GS to see if there is a connector on hte logic board for it.
My guess is that apple was initially planning on putting this piece of shit camera that can't take pictures in the Touch and then figured they would be better off without it.
I find it funny that we had a iPhone that couldn't do video and now a Nano that can't do still.
I really don't get the superfluous apple hate going on in the engadget comments system at the moment.
Apple make good products. So does Microsoft. So does Sony. So do most other technology companies. Get over it. If you don't like apple products don't buy them
Yeah but apple overcharges in all cases.
Didn't you know? Announcements about iClones, combination table/computer/toilet seat, and follow ups to failed MP3 players most people have never even seen are the hotness around here.
According to a business definition, Apple only over overcharges for its products if it could make more money by charging less.
Seeing that a lot of people are willing to pay what Apple charges, it could be that you define "overcharges" as "they charge more than I want to pay."
It's probably because Apple let down a lot of prospective buyers here(along with other places). Microsoft is coming out with an incredibly strong contender this year and a lot of people were expecting Apple to one up it, which it didn't really do. So now we've ended up with a significantly stronger product at a lower price point by a brand most have scoffed at(including Apple, at yesterday's event). That pisses some people off, especially since it appears to have happened because Apple was just to lazy.
I don't think anybody would say apple brought any 'revolutionary' products, or even evolutionary.
Apple should have simply skipped the whole event, just made a press statement with the new ipod models. All this brouha was a overmeasure when compared to the products that came out. Its like a restaurant putting up a big event for new menu, but the change being one dish with parsley added to it, and 3 more fries for rest of them. Oh, and the removal of one dish thats easy to eat after one year of a similar dish you have to suck with a 3 feet long straw.
the reason that happens is because of posters like ridely182. we believe in balance, in fair competition, in pure products and ethical businesses. though none of the companies mentioned might quite be there yet, we try to pave the way on our part by neutralizing the public opinion. unfortunately, neutralizing uncalled apple bias is a task that requires great sacrifices.
I don't get the apple hate here. Bitterness? Astroturf?
There have been "ipod Killers" gunning for apple since the ipod came out. None have killed it. Why? I don't know. They all look decent/ strong on paper, but when it comes down to it they don't sell.
Though Apple seems willing to kick devices to the curb quickly when it has to (the ipod mini was replaced by the nano when it was the best selling ipod).
Considering devices like the ipod and iphone didn't exist 7 years ago, let alone the ability to buy a song from a huge online catalog for a buck. love them or hate them apple has had a positive effect on the market.
My biggest gripe about the new 5th gen nano is that they moved headphone jack and connector.
Now your existing nano accessories (docks) and cases wont work. I was willing to live with the screen and scroller being lower in the exisitng case, but now you cant even plug in your headphones or charger.
Didn't they do that on the 4g as well?
Bastards.
see if they work with the 3rd/1st generation ones. Apple's teams leapfrog ipod designs (so each new model is really 24 months in the shop) Hence the things like spacing and such skip a generation being in common. I don't know if 2nd gen accessories worked with 4th gen as I skipped that model year.
The jack and dock connector are in exactly the same place as on the last-gen, idiot.
No Compass.
Fail.
But can it copy and paste?
It's shiny so it would be good for rolling out the Silly Putty on the Sunday paper!
you can see more pics on http://www.ilogan.info/photos-l%e2%80%99ipod-nano-5g-completement-nu-demonter/
The new nano is a mess.
I think it was probably designed during a lunch break over a couple of bottles of wine.
Here's betting they go back to the drawing board for the 6g.
The video function is/was pretty pointless, but the camera is simply mind boggling. And don't even get me started on the reflectiontastic curved screen...
You obviously don't own a 4th gen Nano. It has a curved screen and yet reflection and glare are not a problem.
You're right, I don't.
But I have used one pretty extensively, and I /did/ find it a problem. Maybe it is somewhat negated by the brightness of the screen, but IMO it is a rather poor piece of design that puts aesthetics over usability, and I'm not willing to put up with that.
looks like it is playing a game of snake on the inside.
Why is this called the "3G" again?
Apple is such a weird company, they'll withold stills because they're rubbish, I'm sure the kid-market this device is aimed at didn't mind VGA cameraphones a year or two ago, and damn do they love posing.
I own an iPod nano 5g. I think it's nice, even the camera is very good quality. It just feels a bit awkward in my hand with the scroll being so low and the iPod being very light and skinnier. I like the glossy look very much(:
The radio is interesting..I don't really like running around to find service to listen to it, but it's okay. It's quite a beautiful piece of work, but of course Apple will go back and redesign something about everything.
