Hama cases foreshadow 5G iPod nano, 3G iPod touch at IFA: hands-on
We know you don't really need any more evidence that Apple is gearing up to unveil at least two new iPod revisions at its forthcoming 'rock and roll' event, but are you seriously going to hit the ignore button on these? If you'll recall, last year's visit to Hama's IFA booth gave us early access to cases of Apple's then-upcoming round of iPod nanos, and this year the company seems to be disclosing all of Cupertino's secrets once more. On hand were cases for Apple's fifth-generation iPod nano and the third-generation iPod touch, both of which seem to make room for a built-in camera. Of course, these lovely peripherals could be nothing more than a complete waste of company resources, but we'd encourage you to browse the gallery below before jumping to that conclusion.

Mhm... both with camera it seems...
Cases..
This is where the "leaks" and "rumors" came from on the iPod Nano..iPhone..
interesting..
So it will have 3G "HSDPA" or the 3G just means third generation?
Apple will get into trouble if there was no HSDPA that's misleading !
Either way I'm getting one, i just sold my old ipod touch 2 days ago because i know newer one is coming.
@DR House- I imagine Apple wouldn't get in trouble for what a case manufacturer decided to put on their package.
Funny....
2G iPod Touch 8Gb, 16Gb......... 3G iPod Touch ... (silence). They know what they gonna look like but not the storage it's going to offer? yeah right
@DR House
Your right, it is misleading, but a little common sense is all it takes to figure out it means 3rd gen.
I doubt 100% that Apple will put 3G in the Ipod Touch, it's just a waste of resources, and of course doing so will blur the line even further and interfere with Iphone sales. I mean, who needs an Iphone when you could just load up Skype on an Ipod Touch "3G." That doesn't really seem too smart on Apple's side of things. Personally, I'd rather Apple not add anything else hardware-wise to the Touch other than the camera and the expected hardware updates. Cause I'm thinking my future 64GB Touch would burn a hole in my pocket if they stuffed a 3G chip in there as well. If anyone really wants 3G data on a device like the Touch that badly, just get an Iphone already, cause either way you'll be locked into a contract with AT&T.
Apple never mentions product generation in its marketing. It's only us who do.
@ AndrewNoNumbers
This is obviously not part of Apple's marketing, it's Hama's, hence the "Ipod Touch 3rd Generation" on the packaging.
@AndrewNoNumbers
Maybe not marketing. But they do elsewhere (sometimes). Visit this site or call Apple and give them your iPod's serial number and ask them what it's called on their iLog screen.

Sorry, unless Apple reinvents the MP3 player all over again, I am done buying ipods for now. All of my old ipods sold for a good price, but I am getting tired of buying new accessories each time.
@ DR House: how much i sold mine for 291 and i'm suffering withdrawals i can't wait for 9/9/09 i wish apple would of just announce this week and release them next week, i can 64gb ipod touch for 399
My first comment @DR House.
Camera hole?
HAMA-time!
Help, I'm alive. And my heart keeps beeeeeeatin' like a Hama...Beating like a HAMA!
kickstand ??
kickstand, i got a saddle made of leather
firstttt and, yeah, this pretty well confirms it. Gotta love week-away spoilers. Lol
Looks... the same.
I'll care more about the mic!
No surprises here, I think its pretty much guaranteed that the new line up of iPods will be getting cameras of some sort, hardly world shattering stuff. I hope Apple have something other than a memory bump and ipod camera's up their sleeve for the expo but I doubt it somehow.
to little to late for these new ipods
Lol... don't kid yourself. I think sales figures will disagree with you.
@rex2745
and why is that ?
@xValentine
well isn't it obvious to little is because they're just adding a camera and its to late for that so to little to late all i could see them doing is a software upgrade but you know they're going to charge for that
You say that, but this year only, (and you know this is true), has a touch-screen based PMP achieved anything close to the 1G iPod touch in terms of build quality and ease of use. And face it guys, tegra and OLED screens are not going to do it for most people outside this lonely little gadget site. Apple will remain dominant because they KNOW what people want. And that's what they make.
Looks fake to me.. the font appears heavier and slightly smaller where it references the 3rd gen just looks a mess to me. somebody has just taken an "old" one, and cut the shape...
How does Hama still have any sort of contract with Apple? Correct me if I'm wrong, but back in the good old days Apple products wouldn't get leaked quite so conspicuously, or without legal retribution..?
Unless, Apple now uses the 'leak' to advertise and drum up hyper-hype for their products?
All of this scheming hurts my head. At least my Aluminium foil hat keeps my thought safe.
I bet they are just guessing the new look x)
Eeeewww! FUGLY nail shot...
Is it me or the iPod touch 3g looks like it has a wider screen?
rank me up if you think I'm correct :D
got your question now?
:D
I'm preordering the Zune HD right now after seeing this.
Same..
I'm just laughing at the pics. C'mon A CAMERA?
And Microsoft is kicking itself. Seriously, think of the audience. Is a teenager going to want a camera or an OLED screen? I am not arguing against the ZuneHD, just Microsoft's inability to connect to the audience (which Apple seems to do each year). The ZuneHD is great on specs but it is not going to appeal to the mass market in the same way as iPods do. That may be fine for those who appreciate technology (who wants to be a sheep?), but it doesn't do a lot for the bottom line.
And, adding to what Jim said, MS have not released the Zune anywhere outside of the US, and they seem to have done an awful job at marketing it from the start.
@Jim: I'm not so sure. Granted, a camera is a more palpable feature to most than an OLED screen, but the pricing for Zune means you can get 16GB at a 8GB iPod price and 32GB at a 16GB iPod price. As long as the iPod Touch prices don't change, I foresee a shift towards Zune HD.
However, we don't know that the only feature being added to the Touch and Nano is a camera. Maybe that hole in the back is for HD video output. Probably not, but we won't know until Sept 9th.
hmm so is a girl leaking this stuff you bad girl, naughty...
BLOODY HELL!!
why do they always need to keep updating them!?
my sister got the newest ipod nano just 2 weeks ago, and now its going to be outdated.......
i want a trade in ;_;
I'm sure anyone who's read Engadget in the past couple months could have told you this was coming...
i dont want to have to wait months to get an ipod.
do you really think my sister reads engadget?? xD
why cant they just make them the best they can be, and then update every 2/3 years like the xbox and PS3.
not every year :(
my ipod touch cost me almost £300
gutted
If you've been following Apple for the last couple of years, then you should know that the most popular products are updated on a yearly basis. So with any purchase of those products, you have to assume that a newer one is coming out within a year. To think anything less is well, foolish
should of waited, your fault
Apple updates their iPod lineup like clockwork every September. You or your sister have no reason to complain.
So basically you're saying that Apple shouldn't improve their products? You don't want better products? Go back to the store and ask for a refund or just stfu already.
It's just like almost all electronics and gadgets.. you could spend your entire life waiting for something a little better.. just get the best of whatever you budget can afford when you want to buy it and don't look back until you're ready to upgrade..
What about Bluetooth headset support?
I never liked hama, now I even like them less. I mean yeah, great, wow, we know iPods with camera are coming. But Apple gives them data in advance and they just let it leak like that. All of Apples security, top secret product development goes out the window right there, and exactly the same happened a year ago with the now old iPods. If I was Apple I'd take action and as a consequence don't give out that data anymore before the product is introduced.
From what I see, the new iPods will have ugly backs, especially the nano with two holes. Doesn't look like Apple put a lot of thought into that design. OK, a camera can't be placed anywhere else but the back, but look at the iPhone, it doesn't look out of place there. Couldn't imagine that circle in the middle of the thing, yet they did it on the iPods. They could have given the touch a MacBook Pro like back with the glossy black finish, so you don't see the camera in it right away. Or widened the (ugly) plastic cover for the antenna and put it in there. So many options, but the middle? They blew it. They saw the camera stats on flickr and realized how much people use their iPhone camera and they wanted the iPod to get a slice of that, so they didn't even bother with a new design but just put a camera in the old one. Way to make progress.
My local Currys digital has absolutely no iPod touch cases in stock, and all its Nano cases are being sold at 75% off. Change is definitely afoot.
Interesting that the capacities of the 3rd-gen Touch are missing. Guess Apple's keeping that a secret.
Looks to be same form factor, cameras, and no doubt some internal changes. 3GS chipset anyone?
